How to Keep Your Pet Out of Your Garden

!±8± How to Keep Your Pet Out of Your Garden

Between the snails and aphids, you have enough pests to keep from ruining your beautiful garden. The last thing you need is your four-legged friend trampling through it. Thanks to technological advancements in the pet industry, there is an easy way to keep your pooch out of your garden.

There are a variety of electronic devices available that are specifically designed to keep pets out of certain areas of the yard. Some of these devices involve simple wiring, while others are completely wireless.

The wire devices come with a transmitter, a pet receiver collar and the wiring. The wiring is very easy to install. You simply place it around the area you want to make off limits to your pet and secure it to the ground with wire stakes. You can also bury the wire a few inches under the ground if desired; its just as effective.

The wireless devices typically include just a transmitter and a receiver collar for your pet. One such product is the Paws Away outdoor pet barrier. The transmitter is disguised like a rock but its actually a wireless transmitter. It is designed to look like a rock so that it blends nicely into the landscaping of your garden. This waterproof outdoor "rock" transmitter functions off of batteries. You just place it in the area you want to make off limits to your pet, adjust the coverage area and your pets receiver collar will do the rest. The beautiful thing about this particular device is that it also has a wired option. This added feature allows you to create a custom-shaped barrier around whatever zone you want to make off limits to your pet.

No matter if you have a wired or wireless device, whenever your pet nears the off-limit zone, the receiver collar will beep a warning tone. If your pet continues it will then administer a quick static correction (a lot like the shock you get when you walk across a carpet and then touch someone). These static shocks are completely harmless, yet enough to cause your dog to want to avoid the area.

So if you want to cross off your dog from your list of garden pests, consider adding an electronic outdoor barrier. Who knows-maybe one day they will figure out a way to make tiny collars for the snails and bugs!

Invisible Dog Fence - Is Training Your Dog Difficult?

!±8± Invisible Dog Fence - Is Training Your Dog Difficult?

An invisible dog fence must not be used as replacement for actual dog training. In order to make your invisible dog fence effective in teaching your dog time and patience is necessary. Aside from that, you need to follow strict rules and guidelines to make the invisible dog fence system work effectively.

Using the invisible dog fence system for training your dog can either be done on your own or with a help of a professional dog trainer. However, even with professional help, you will still carry much of the burden of executing training guidelines for your dog whenever the trainer is not around.

Training the dog to recognize an invisible dog fence is both time-consuming and stretches your patience. However, this task is much easier when you are well-bonded together and the dog listens to your instructions.

This training system could span from 2-6 weeks, depending on how fast your dog can learn.

You can initially setup the training by placing small red flags along where you have buried the cable. This will serve as physical reminder for your dog on where its boundaries are. Make sure to tape the prongs on the collar to prevent sending out shocks to your dog.

Then, put on your dog's leash whenever they go out within the fence boundaries. A warning beep will start off whenever it goes beyond the area, so this will ensure the dog stays within the boundaries. When this happens, pull off the dog right away and praise him if he obeys.

Do this exercise throughout the day so the dog can get accustomed to this setup and will immediately back off when the warning beep is activated.

Once you have allowed the dog to be acquainted with this system, you can now remove the tape from the prongs on the collar to allow the shock. Although the shock is not painful to the dog it is enough to get their attention and alert them to turn back.

It is comparable to experiencing a static shock and then you come in contact with any form of metal. You need to make necessary adjustments for the amount of shock your dog will receive, according to its size and level of response.

However, every dog owner must be aware that not all shock collars can be adjusted so make sure to purchase those with adjustable settings. And whenever your dog goes out, check the collar to correct the shock level, just in case it reaches the border.

Make sure not to remove the dog's leash simultaneous with the removal of the collar prongs' cover. Keep the leash on your dog whenever he explores the area within the invisible dog fence.

Humane Contain HC-8000 Review

!±8± Humane Contain HC-8000 Review

The humane contain HC-8000 by High Tec Pet is both a lot and very little for your money. You can get their HC-8000 system for 0. That seems like a great deal. This system has a good set of features, much more than you would usually expect in a fence of this price.

Standard you get:
• Progressive correction levels
• Battery backup available
• 18 gauge wire
• 2 collars

The Humane Contain can also be used with a range of accessories including a scat mat and a automatic dog door that is triggered by the humane contain collar.

There are two big problems:
First, these systems are really inconsistent. We have heard from owners that the collars have a lot of problems and break. There are also reports of the collar correcting the dog for no apparent reason. Second, is their customer service. We hear that they are not very good at fixing problems when they arise. They have 25 pages of complaints at consumer affairs.

Here is what you get in the box:
• Base Station - one of the bigger units. It has the usual controls,
• the boundary width dial
• the power boost switch here lets you power yards up to 50 acres
• basic on/off switch

We like that all the controls are big, well laid out and clearly labeled. The base station is meant to be waterproof, we have found that it is not. I would not mount this outside. It has an optional rechargeable battery pack that slots in the back and lets you run the system when there is a power failure. It costs about , which isn't bad value. It is the only in ground pet containment system with a rechargeable battery for the control unit.

Collar - it looks dated. It does have proportional correction, which is okay, but better still would be to have adjustable correction levels so that you could set the base line correction level.

The collar uses a proprietary battery from Humane Contain. They cost about and last only a month which gets costly. There is are chargeable collar available with their higher end systems. But, the big flaw in this system is that this collar is not reliable. There are lots of reports of this triggering for no apparent reason, and we hear complaints of these breaking early in their life.

The included wire is a very impressive 18 gauge. The insulation on this is really thick and it is very impressive that this comes standard in the box. The system also comes with a generous 10 splices.

Conclusion
The system has a 90 day money back period, then a one-year warranty. But we've heard numerous complaints about customer service and so would not have a great deal of confidence in it being honored. This should be a great deal. But the unreliability of the system make this system something I would not be comfortable putting on my dogs.

The Advantages Of An Invisible Dog Fence

!±8± The Advantages Of An Invisible Dog Fence

When you're erecting a dog fence at home, spare a thought for the people who built the Dingo Fence in Australia. It was put up in the 1880's to protect enormous flocks of sheep in Southern Queensland, where Dingoes had almost been exterminated.

To prevent Dingoes from other areas getting to the sheep, the fence was built. It is 6 feet high and there is one foot of it underground, with uprights every 9 metres. It's the longest fence in the World, stretching 5,320 kilometres which is over 3,305 miles! Ironically, it has not been a complete success - dingoes still lurk in the area!

Does Your Dog Need An Invisible Fence?

Some dogs delight in damaging flower beds and destroying vegetable gardens. Worse still, they might escape and cause an accident - for which you would be liable. If you don't want very high, solid fencing around your property - or the price of it, it might be time to consider an 'invisible' fence.

What Is An Invisible Fence?

There are many of these on the market now and they all work in a similar way. An invisible fence allows you to have one or more dogs running freely on your property, within boundaries chosen by you.

How Do These Fences Work?

A wire (of anything up to 400m long) is put onto the ground, buried just under the surface or attached to a fence that is already there. The wire carries a signal transmitted from a small unit. The dog wears a special collar that receives a signal if he goes near the wire.

The signals are usually zoned. When the dog gets anywhere near the wire he goes into a 'warning zone' and he will hear a warning 'beep' from his collar. If he gets even closer, he goes into a 'correction zone' and will receive a buzz from a small electrical impulse via the collar.

Once the dog begins to realise the boundaries, the owner can reduce the electrical impulses and rely on the audible warnings. Eventually, once the dog is reliable and not going anywhere near the fence, the collar may be taken off - or substituted for a dummy collar while he's on - probation'!

Making Adjustments To The System

These fences can be set up to suit any dog and any layout defined by the owner. The distances of both the warning and the correction zones can be adjusted. The strength of the electrical impulse can be altered to suit the size and temperament of the dog.

Will My Dog Be Hurt By The Electrical Impulses?

No - it doesn't hurt. It's not a new idea - this has been used in different forms of dog training for more than 40 years.

I Have More Than One Dog - Will This System Still Work?

Yes - with these systems, as long as each dog has a collar with a receiver, the system will work for them all.

Don't Forget The 'Dummy' Collar

Most systems recommend that your dog wears a dummy collar for a few days prior to the invisible fence being set up. This is for two reasons. It lets the dog get used to the collar so that it's not distracted by the unusual feel of it when the zone impulses start to be used. It's also important because it can be counter-productive for the dog to associate the impulses with the collar, rather than the fence.

What Happens If My Dog Gets Through The Fence?

This is very rare and usually means that the collar isn't fitting properly, leading to the dog receiving weak or no impulses.

Choosing an Wireless Dog Fence - RF Vs WiFi

!±8± Choosing an Wireless Dog Fence - RF Vs WiFi

Until this year if you wanted an wireless dog fence, the only game in town was the PetSafe IF-300. Using traditional radio wave technology, the IF-300 creates a containment radius of up to 90 feet giving it a coverage of 0.5 acres. The IF-300 works well and gets good reviews from our customers, but the range limits its usefulness. After all the most common use for wireless systems, with their circular containment area is rural properties where a 90 foot range is simplify too small.

Perimeter Technologies is introducing in April 2009 a WiFi Fence, a wireless containment system based on the WiFi technology that is used in the wireless internet routers that are in most people's homes. This has two significant advantages, range and the ability for two way communication. It also has one significant disadvantage, power usage.

The WiFi dog fence claims a containment radius range of 200 feet giving it a containment area of over 2.5 acres, a major improvement over the IF-300. Although, we would love to see something even larger, using perhaps WiMax which has a reported range over a mile. WiFi still gives a large enough coverage area for your dogs to get some real space.

The WiFi fence also has two-way communication between the collar and the base station, telling the owner instantly how far the dog has wandered. I also gives you instant alerts if the dog challenges the boundary, if the battery is running low, or if the link between the collar and base station is lost. This alert is really useful and we hope it finds wider adoption, since particularly in the early days of the training you are constantly worrying about if the dog has escaped.

The downside is that WiFi is notoriously power hungry, so we are concerned that this will result in poor battery life. The collar for the WiFi dog fence is not rechargeable, and is likely proprietary so we hope that Perimeter has this problem solved because the feature set should make this the new leader in wireless dog containment.
